Refinishing a Table

Lee’s parents have a 18 year-old kitchen table that the finish has worn off. They had some quick fix ideas, but I offered to sand it down and re-stain and seal it. They were not up to the task, but when I got laid off, I was excited to do it.

I arrived on a sunny 70 degree morning. My mother in-law and I carried the table out to their deck. I closed the patio door and hooked up my electric sander and removed the damaged finish. (Inside, my mother in-law sat on a chair and watched me work. Little did I know I was the entertainment for the day! Quarantine has made us all hungry for fresh faces and fun!)

Once the sanding was completed, I applied several coats of DuraSeal (Dark Walnut).

The great thing about DuraSeal is that Lee’s Father has used this to repair hardwood floors, and furniture for years. His method has typically been to apply it directly on top of the existing finish. My in-laws had to call around to find this, because not every hardware store carries it. It is easy to use and has great coverage. I needed to apply several coats to match the color of the legs. (I did not remove any finish from the legs. Even though they are 18 years old, they still look like new!)

I went back the next day to apply 2 coats of polyurethane to seal it for 20 more years of use!

It was incredibly satisfying to be able help my in-laws restore their table. They are very happy with the results!!
